I can’t help but think that George must have been a humble type to be open and take lessons from anyone and be willing to make mistakes in front of a master.

Helen, you might like this Wilco song – very Beatleish in general but a little bit of My Sweet Lordish guitar that is very pleasing. It sounds good Loud :)

    Helen!
Funny you should mention ‘The Specials’. English Beat must have sold their soul to the devil that is Houston because they have a nice little following here with just the one city tour. With their very loyal, affectionate crowd, I try to never miss them when they come to town. Always a damn fine time.

I just got to looking at Barbara Dickson. It took a few seconds to register that I was looking at a woman. It’s true. She had an extra month but still couldn’t top it :D

The man with the very blond hair sitting at the Desk with the stick on ears is Bob Sergeant, producer of Pelican West by Haircut 100. Sitting next to him is Mark Dernley, engineer and notebook writer. He would write down everybody’s quotes that popped out whilst recording. I remember Andy Partridge’s very well, as it so made me laugh… when asked whether he liked the strings that had just been recorded he replied “Erm, wipe them for now.” Of course nowadays you can simply do that, but in those days once anything was wiped, it was simple gone for good! Bob was definitely our George Martin. Very funny and very Sagittarian…

This computer is so slow tonight that I didn’t think that was going to post at all. I didn’t watch Jona Lewie today because it’s not so long since I’ve seen it but it hung around in my head all day and so I’ve had no choice but to listen to it now and realised that his voice sounds a bit like a layer of chocolate or something with a cigaretty sort of sound over the top. Never noticed that before. I wonder if he knows that :)

I went to our local rugby leagues club for dinner with some friends tonight (great cheap meal!) and we discovered that Kamahl is performing there on 4th December at 2pm. $20 a ticket….anyone interested??

  21. thelonehydrangea on 26th November 2009 at 12:52 pm permalink

Kamahl’s “Why are people so unkind” is one of the best ever :D but I wouldn’t cross the street to see him and I don’t think you would, either, Elissa :D unless you were a huge fan of One Hundred Children or something.

hehe….you’re right tlh….but I think the grannies love him and hence why it’s on a Friday afternoon at 2pm…. We had a great laugh though remembering that Hey Hey episode.

Where you ever interviewed by our infamous Molly Meldrum Nick?

would i be right in saying that Bob Sergant produced “Mummer” by the boys Nick a lovely album , reminds me of August ( in the morning)

Can recall one… Was recording some funky rhythm guitar when they, Bob and Mark stopped recording for some reason, probably heard an incorrect note, to which I replied “Of course it’s out of tune it’s one of those chords”

    Molly Meldrum rings a bell…

Kinda bizarre to think you know all these people. Here I am just digging up a tune that frequently plays in my world and you know all the characters and stories.behind them. Love it! If music is anything like the art and design world, it must be a very small world, yes?

    Hey Gary,
You’ll love this one… Had a very esoteric drinking game back in the day with my vinyl-lovin’ buddies called ‘Bob’ where you had to guess if an album was produced by Bob Sergant or Bob Clearmountain. Too funny, I tell ya…

  31. Helen on 26th November 2009 at 3:19 pm permalink

Not Bob related at all but…
I once witnesssed a very funny drinking game in the Student’s Union. The Beer Hunter. One can of lager was shaken violently before everyone chose a can randomly. Then, in turn, you had to open the can next to the face of the person next to you… Russian Roulette with beer. :)

Very tense – but funny to the watch.

I’m not a fan of lager myself.

  32. Tex on 26th November 2009 at 3:25 pm permalink

But you are fond of funny drinking games, Helen…
Speaking of which, did you ever get your Starbucks fix? I myself fell straight into a pumpkin soy latte yesterday. If that was bad, I don’t wanna be good…

You know what Tex ? I gave up coffee over 6 months ago on the advice of ZBd. Still love the smell but don’t touch a drop.
Did manage to drag myself to the chocolate machine. Sometimes you just have to, so I did and damned well enjoyed it ! :)

I gave up milk (except for just a splash in tea now and then) for soy ages ago. Killed the awful hayfever I use to experience. I’m not a huge coffee drinker either. Mostly tea and the odd glass o’ vino, nothing crazy even though it may seem otherwise… Am a sucker for a Pimms though no matter what time of year -with a bag of salt and vinegar chips! Dinner of champions!

  36. Helen on 26th November 2009 at 4:06 pm permalink

Don’t drink milk either… or eat bananas. Might have mentioned that around the place before..might have…

  37. Tex on 26th November 2009 at 4:26 pm permalink

You’ve only mentioned it fewer times than I’ve used the word ‘esoteric’, ‘just’ and ‘too funny, I tell ya…’ pfft! (and ‘pfft’!)

No need to worry, Helen. Just bring on your banana stories a million times, Helen, I don’t care. Love ‘em!

Gary, I have trying to find a clip of David Paton performing when he was in Australia a couple of years ago. I know it’s out there but can’t find it now for some reason. He was part of this:

    Countdown Spectacular 2

A second tour was held from Saturday 18 August to Wednesday 5 September 2007 in all major capital cities of Australia. This featured international artists as well as “a host of Australian Countdown favourites”. Artists on the tour were:

Birtles Shorrock Goble, the original members of Little River Band
    Graham Bonnet
    Kate Ceberano
    Richard Clapton
    Martha Davis from The Motels
    Doug Fieger from The Knack
    Samantha Fox
    Richard Gower from Racey
Paul Gray from Wa Wa Nee
Ignatius Jones from Jimmy And The Boys
Katrina Leskanich from Katrina and the Waves
    David Mason from The Reels
Les McKeown from The Bay City Rollers
    Doc Neeson from The Angels
    Sharon O’Neill
    David Paton from Pilot
    Plastic Bertrand
    The Radiators
    John Schumann from Redgum
    Robin Scott from M
    Rick Springfield
    Supernaut
    John Paul Young

The concerts were hosted by Ian “Molly” Meldrum, John Paul Young and Gavin Wood.

I saw it on telly and he was still sounding – and looking – good.
