Side note but speaking of Lilliput, there should be a new ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ movie coming out sometime soon. Emily Blunt and the film crew were all over Blenheim when I went to enjoy the bluebells there first week in May. Only thing is Jack Black has his hands on the production so I’m told so no telling how it’ll turn out. Could be great or awful. Could be too ‘Yankified’ for even this Yank. Some things are sacred, I figure…

I used to love playing with the Baufix Kit at school. And the smell of it was so nice. And making towers out of rods -or Cuisenaire as they are officially known – and they had a lovely woody smell, too.

Nick, are there any such things from childhood that stand out as special to you?

There was an old lady who lived next door over a really high brick wall who’d let her garden grow wild and secret. We found a way in one summer evening and caught a glimpse of her through the back door window. She wore black victorian dress and spotted us. We ran for our lives!

    Nothing else really… ha!

There’s so many childhood memories Tan… Finding a double bass in my aunty Susan’s attic room left a very strong imprint…

I’m off to bed though… Fantastic question!

It sounds like a scene from a movie, doesn’t it – can picture it clearly. The poor woman. Probably scared her to death as well. Some smelling salts might have been in order after that :) . It sounds like you might have built up a bit of Mystery surrounding the old woman. Kids are funny like that. I have an Aunty Susan as well and she had no attic or double bass but she did colour in a picture in my colouring book once very beautifully. Dad had a guitar tucked down the side of his wardrobe and if you stood on it you could then get your leg up and get a toe-hold on the cover strip on the wall and thence up to the top of the wardrobe. I expect in some circles standing on a guitar might be considered Sacrilege!! But try it sometime; it’s fun.

When I was little my parents had a large wardrobe in their bedroom. It was very ornate with a carved plinth on the top. One wet & wintery day I was using up some of my energy by jumping on their bed – which was forbidden & therefore more fun. At the highest point of the jump I caught a glipmse of something on top of the wardrobe. 3 brown bags in a row with the sorts of things a 6 year old would love peeking out of them – sticks of rock, colouring pencils, knitting needles.
I had found where my parents stashed the christmas stocking presents & learned there was no father christmas – although I’m pretty sure my older brother had already shattered that illusion for me prior to this. The wardrobe played quite a large part in my childhood- I spent many hours playing in Narnia thanks to it.

Oh that sounds a lovely wardrobe, Ellie. A magical wardrobe. What a good jumper you were :) . Wardrobes were so good for hiding in. I used to love looking at Mum’s pretty shoes and running a hand over a silky dressing gown of hers. And looking through her handbag for stray pieces of Juicy Fruit chewing gum. I jumped off the top of the wardrobe onto the bed, snapped the bed legs and got a hiding and a half. Mum and Dad had to prop the bed up on bricks for years until they got a new one. 3.35 am listening:

Thanks to my brother I was always very much into tree houses and kitting them out. Plenty of rope for swinging to other branches and slingshots with huge reserves of acorns to pelt intruders. Huge leaf piles to soften the blow when coming down…

Hey Nick – Just booked tickets for the show. Really looking forward to it. It will be a night of memories for my wife and I. We saw you play a very small club in Toronto back when you were touring “Postcards …” It was a wonderful night. I hope you’ll give the 12 string a workout (you’re a fine player …).
