Coming late to the topic but one of my favorite calendars that stayed up long after the year had passed was one by photographer Richard Avedon.

Paul’s singing great isn’t he Gary? His trademark screeching style when he goes up high for the Benefit Of Mr Kite sounds just so right on the night!

I’m in the mood for miserable songs today.

    Ah, The Beatles…
I remember putting aside the better part of a year to listen to their albums and theirs alone.

    Miserable songs?
Well, the tone here is a bit melancholy to be sure but the message is most definitely to keep going.

A great one from one of the most influential, underrated bands in history…

    Elissa,
Come to think of it, to answer your question, I don’t think I’ve ever had a New Year’s resolution!

  16. Elissa on 9th December 2009 at 12:55 pm permalink

Why miserable songs Helen? Not having a good day? :(

No? Hmmmm….why is that do you think? I usually do but it’s mostly always just normal stuff nothing profound. I like to keep things simple. :) Don’t like to put too much pressure on myself!!

Loved that song by the way.

Maybe I should have asked later when I’m not at work and have sound !

    Silly me. :)

Going on with your request, Helen, I’ve always had a thing for this song and burned out a number of cassettes back in the day listening to it. For the longest time, I could never understand the lyrics (no google back then and I didn’t have the album to check the liner notes for the lyrics) so couldn’t focus on anything other than the total sound of it all. Not sure if this one is for a miserable day but for me the chemical reaction in my brain to this one somehow kicks open a door and lets in the light.

LOVE Talk Talk Tex…..I have their cd in my car atm….and also these guys…

Saw The Church three nights in a row at the Mansfield Tavern in 1985. They were the head liner for Madness!! Brilliant! I lost a shoe in the moshpit! LOL I thought I was going to get trampled to death that night!

  21. Tex on 9th December 2009 at 1:55 pm permalink

The Church. A very cool band. I remember the enigmatic Peter Murphy as the warm-up act for those guys when they blew through Austin back in the early 90’s. Nobody knew who he was but they sure didn’t forget once Mr. Murphy left the stage! One of the most truly out-standing, magnetic performances I’ve ever seen. And the demand for encores went on forever…

Tonight I looked up the Porpoise Song by the Monkees, which is one of my very favourite songs, and the Church version came up as well and it went through mind: I wonder if Tex is a fan of the Church and then I visit here and you fellas are talking about the Church. Funny how that happens sometimes. I don’t think it has anything on the original but I give them points for having had a crack at it on their album of covers.

Just thinking….Helen, you might be able to lose yourself in the mood of this. It’s one of those songs that takes you away a bit. I notice that the only comment on it reads “have never gotten more? chills from a song”. It’s one that you can close you eyes and let it wash over you. And it’s what we all seek.
