Do you know there was a version of that song by someone else in the eighties? Well, it’s true. It might be of some interest to Nick and Mr B to read the comments underneath it.

    Very clever ;)

I have got a Beachboys concert – something like Live at Knebworth, something like that, and Carl is in a green top and singing God Only Knows and it’s Beautiful -it’s one of those songs that every time you hear it you think: Now that’s what music’s for.

Have been spun out tonight to read about the Party Boys – the members list here – had no idea that Joe Walsh was in them at one stage and also Eric Burdon. Others as well.

It’s all clearing away to let the light through Helen. Pruning and trimming, crikey, it’ll be swimming all the way to the bank next! To tell tales of the unexpected goings on along the river… ahhh, I’m all a quiver with expectation…

A classic Alan Lancaster pose – sleeve-less black T-shirt & Steiner bass. Something like that anyway. He went on to form “The Lancaster Bombers”. I learned to play bass by copying Alan. That’s why I’m so crap.

My latest tips for the top are -
    1. Two Door Cinema Club
    2. Everything Everything
    3. Wolf Gang

    Look them up on Youtube.

Mr B, you might be pleased to know that a couple of days before you mentioned them I had put Empire of the Sun here. It was by way of showing the bloke’s amusing make up. There’s no way you’d let Helen out wearing make up like that :)

  10. Mr B on 10th December 2009 at 12:56 pm permalink

I Love Empire of the Sun. The 1st Four tracks on that album are mind-blowing. The rest is a tad disapointing.

Damn it, time for a makeover. I thought I looked quite good with that white pan stick on :(

The only reason I know they exist is because they won a few things here at the ARIAS (Australian Recording Industry Association Awards). I was put out because they got single of the year over Last Day On Earth by Kate Miller-Hiedke. I wanted her to win :) . She also wears less make-up :)

If you leaned with Alan we should talk… He plays it nice and straight. Really nice that. You know where you are with cup of char from Alan Lancastar!
Listened to Empire Of The Sun last Christmas. My memory of them is a bit nouvelle vague, but that probably means I wasn’t ready for them. I’ll give it another chew thanks to you Mr B.

Tan The Pan Stick Fan, or is that aunt Helen The Water Melon? I found this whilst listening to your suggestion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1dFmWZhSZM
I prefer her live, and the make up, stylist and lighting person from the video clip should have been told off for somehow being able to make a very pretty women not look her best. Or was it a case of trying too hard? Always an Indian bummer that one… Kate’s live version is a class A performance… I get very inspired seeing and hearing such great singers and performers. Especially those so at ease with singing their song. Great stuff. Thank you for plosting Plan Plan.

Helan, Thank you for introducing The Sleepy Jacksan. Loving that video. Very Georgie Harrison. And angels galore! Who let the frogs out? Croke!

Go to your room at once Tex! And find another Mr Gonzales clipping? So cool. Love his skin, and the hands moving over the keys like cream into an Irish coffee… Wonderful. Marvelous. Extraordinary. The double bass playing and sound is beyond words…

Not to mean this in any sort of sacrilegious way whatsoever but when I saw these guys on concert, all decked out in their spiffy white dinner suits looking sooo damn relaxed onstage, living for their moment in time that had finally but finally arrived on the international stages of the world, I though, “You know, if God were ever in a band, he’s be in Ruben’s band, no doubt!”

Sacrilegious Tex? Na, as the well know athiest Bertrand Russell answered when asked if he thought God wrote the bible said that he thought god wrote all books.
I reckon the same power (whatever one wishes to call it) not only wrote all books but is also in everything and is everything and everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. Bit like a candle flame, you only see it when you light the candle, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there does it? So where does it come from then? Golly, strike a light! God is a swan vista social club card? :-D

Please give your sickly child a big healing hug from here Annette! And winter’s rest…

Luke Steele was in the Sleepy Jackson before Empire of the Sun. :)

I do find his voice a little nasal and wasp like at times – don’t tell Mr B that though…

We’re just back from watching Tom in his Christmas play – doing the ‘coat dance’ in Joseph. I think he may have a future in the arts, although he did say before we left he didn’t think it would be long before he was in jail. No idea what he meant !

Helen, you’d think I would have heard something of the Sleepy Jackson before this :) . It’s a bit like being in Canada as a Gordon Lightfoot fan and the people I met there weren’t into him. Would have to agree with Nick that the guitar in that song sounds quite George, more specifically in his song Blow Away.

I had only ever heard of them and that was thanks to Ben Lee mentioning them a few years back in Catch My Disease which is still sounding very happy

This computer is so slow today that it has taken over 10 minutes for this section to come up again! Arghhh. It’s funny how one thing leads to another. When I went to look at the live version of the Kate song (the first time I heard her sing it was live on telly, incidentally) there she was singing a version of Empire of the Sun’s Walking on a Dream

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX_Oq7S6QdA&feature=channel

She’s one of the few Aussie female singers I can handle -ones such as Missy Higgins and Sarah Blasko give me the pip well and truly.

Here is sort of a….thing – Merle Haggard impersonating Johnny Cash. This was on a record in our house growing up. He’s impersonating others as well. Pretty amazing, really. It would be like Nick being on stage and being able to copy his contemporaries (sp?) -sounding like Howard and Nik or old Tone, as I like to call him. It makes me wonder how Merle could do it. Listed at the side of it there is an unusual Marty Robbins one – Marty Robbins being spun out as Merle impersonates him right in front of him.

I love the videos to “walking on a dream” & “we are the people”. I’d like to think that they’re taking the piss out of themselves but I’m not so sure. Either way they’re so over-the-top they’re simply brilliant.

Gary – I love Any Partridge. I listened to Nonsuch over & over again in the 90s. When you listen to a lot of new bands these days they sound so much like XTC in their Black Sea days. Which is no bad thing.

  34. thelonehydrangea on 10th December 2009 at 10:24 pm permalink

Yeah, surely in Walking in a Dream they are sending themselves up with the exaggerated posing and so on. Either that or they are wankers, so let’s hope it’s the former :D .

Forgot to say that the “Johnny Cash” part kicks in at 2:30.

I really like Forever Live and Die by them, Tex.

Hold Your Head Up inspired me to get an old Zombies tape out today. I would have liked to have put Conversation of Floral Street here but it isn’t to be found. So instead will put Something Borrowed Something Blue by Ben Lee (2002) in case Helen (and others) would like to check it out -a lot heavier than that other one of his you heard. Probably more my cup of tea.

While looking for Ben Lee, Sway by Bic Runga came up down the side and my heart skipped a beat. Haven’t heard that in ages. Oh it still sounds beautiful. Beautiful in every way. I suppose it will have to go in another comment so it won’t get in the filter.
